TAKE A LOOK AT TIN PAN SOUTH

Part of what makes Nashville different from other cities with musical traditions—such as Austin, New Orleans, and Chicago—is that Nashville’s foundation is songwriters. The people who write the lyrics that you can’t get out of your head are based here, and often write together here. You might not know their names or faces, but you know their work.

Each spring, visitors and locals get to hear more than 400 of those songwriters perform. The 32nd annual Tin Pan South is a five-day festival at 10 different venues throughout the city. If you are in town between April 2 and April 6, 2024, it is worth checking out these venues and the schedules to hear the songs and the stories behind them. (And if you are not in town, mark your calendar for next year.)

Tin Pan South is billed as the largest songwriter festival in the world. The venues range from the ultra-famous, such as The Bluebird Café and the Station Inn to the relatively new, such as Anzie Blue. They’re located all over town, from Green Hills to Midtown to downtown. Most venues have multiple performances each night. While you do have to get up and re-enter after each show (so your ticket can be scanned), you don’t have to go across town to catch the next act if you don’t want to.

Tickets are priced reasonably, most are between $15-$28, so you can afford to see a number of acts during the festival. Most of the performances are in the evenings, but there are some mid-day and morning seminars during the week as well. Tickets are available online in advance of the shows.

For its large size and scope, the real appeal of Tin Pan South is its intimacy. Many of the venues are relatively small, and, by definition, a songwriter show is quieter than an arena concert. In some cases, the audience will have an opportunity to interact with the songwriters

This year, the festival, an event of the Nashville Songwriters Association International, features American Idol-winner, Scotty McCreery, Sandra McCracken, HARDY and more than 397 other songwriters.
