“There are many reasons to feel alienated from one another these days. But I believe the only way to thrive is to pay attention to how we can support one another,” says Joshua Edward Bennett, gallery manager for Tinney Contemporary. Bennett is the curator for Yin-Yang, an upcoming group art exhibition at the Bobby Nashville.

Yin-Yang opens Friday, Sept. 6, 2024 and runs through Tuesday, March 11, 2025. While the artworks in the exhibition are only in black and white, Bennett’s focus is not on dichotomy, but what he describes as “a necessity for balance and harmony. I believe the nuance and complications of life are what makes it interesting. Nothing is truly ever black and white. I see this show as a manifestation of empathy and a challenge to be willing to shed the concept of rigid definition.”

Bennett derived the title of the exhibition from the Taoist symbol of Yin-Yang, which acknowledges opposing forces but also presents the importance of forces working in harmony and balance. “I was introduced to the symbol as a teenager in the 1990's when it abruptly found its way into popular American culture. It was scrawled with Sharpies alongside peace symbols and that weird "S" on notebook covers and backpacks. So personally, it has a nostalgic, perhaps even tongue-in-cheek connotation,” he says. “This nuance is reflected in the varied approaches represented by the works included in this exhibition: some are serious, some are funny, many manage to be both at once.”

Artists whose work will be included in Yin-Yang include: John Phillip Abbott, Anthony Baab, Cova New Bennett, Joshua Edward Bennett, Mary Stengel Bentley, Ron Buffington, Ryan Travis Christian, Stephen Collier, Lindsy Davis, Thomas Delaney, Nick Fagan, Abdi Farah, Generic Art Solutions, Jesse Hale, Lena Kolb, Kate Nova, Raymond Padron, Amy Pleasant, Josh Reames, Amber Renaye, Esther Ruiz, Jon Shoemaker, Geoffrey Todd Smith, Lauren Taylor, Erica Westenberger and Lain York.

Art exhibitions at Bobby Nashville are free and open to the public. Hotel guests and the public are encouraged to explore, engage and consider the messages of these works.
